What’s the Real Impact of Tree Planting? A Social Return on Investment Perspective
The Tse-Xin Organic Agriculture Foundation in Taiwan has long been committed to promoting a healthy and sustainable environment. In line with this mission, the Foundation initiated a long-term coastal tree planting program in northern Taiwan to combat environmental degradation and enhance community resilience. Recognizing that environmental restoration also yields broader social value, the Foundation partnered with the Asian Institute for Impact Measurement and Management (AIIMM) to conduct a Social Return on Investment (SROI) analysis of the initiative.
Tree planting, when thoughtfully designed and implemented, can contribute to equity, public health, social cohesion, and local development. Emerging research underscores the importance of community participation, inclusive planning, and alignment with local livelihood needs in achieving these outcomes. Participatory approaches have been shown to foster stewardship and improve program sustainability, especially in underserved communities. In addition, tree planting projects can contribute to economic revitalization by increasing property values and improving the quality of public spaces.
This report presents the SROI evaluation process and findings. It outlines how the social outcomes were identified, measured, and monetized, and offers practical insights for future nature-based initiatives aiming to deliver measurable, meaningful impact.
