United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD)

Definition

An autonomous research institute within the UN system that undertakes interdisciplinary research and policy analysis on the social dimensions of contemporary development issues. The UNRISD Sustainable Development Performance Indicators Project research has identified a number of blind spots in corporate sustainability reporting that Stakeholders need to be filled to gauge whether companies’ performance is consistent with the transformative vision of the SDGs, including:

  • measurement of actions that actually transform the root causes of unsustainable development, including inequalities, distributive injustice and unequal power relations
  • quantitative, time series data that reveal performance trends over time
  • “material” and “contextualized” metrics, informed by social science research, that show how entities perform relative to sustainability thresholds.
